Tina Tina Amanda AmandaMaureen was an athlete of natural talent and was a fan of tough athletic games. Her talent for performing was an ideal complement to the passion she had for athletics. This was demonstrated by her winning pretty much every Feis awards for drama and the stage that her country had to offer. At the age of 14, she was accepted into the famous Abbey Theater and pursued her goal of studying classical theater as well as operatic singing. Charles Laughton was mesmerized after seeing a Maureen screen test. He was fascinated by the beauty of her eyes. Before casting her to star on the screen in Jamaica Inn (1939), Laughton along with his co-star, Erich Pommer, changed her name to Maureen FitzSimons to "Maureen O'Hara" which was a little shorter last name for the marquee. Maureen was on contract with Laughton to film her next movie in America with RKO Pictures (The Hunchback of Notre The Dame 1939). Maureen's contract with Laughton was acquired by RKO following this film had such an enormous hit. At 19, Maureen had already starred in two motion picture majors together with Laughton.
